SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY The schedule of Masses for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Holy Day of Obligation, is:
Monday, August 14, 7 PM Vigil Mass – English Tuesday, August 15, 8:30 AM Mass--English 12:15 PM Mass-- English 7:00 PM Mass – Spanish
What does this Solemnity celebrate? Since Mary was preserved free from all stain of original sin, her body was spared earthly decay. She was taken up into heaven body and soul once her earthly life was over. Since Mary was the mother of Jesus and the first to believe in him, she was raised by Him to the glorified life of heaven. It is, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, "a singular participation in her Son's Resurrection" (no. 966). Mary is also a symbol of the Church and a model for all Christians. The Assumption of Mary is the realization of the hope that all believers share. Her entrance into Heaven is a sign of the promise made by Jesus that one day we too will be received into paradise.
