"Before joining the Legion of Mary army, I felt alone and lost or at least without hope. I became a wife, mother and step-mother as a teen. I had no idea what I would be facing in being a wife, giving birth and in raising two children when I too was so young. Being a wife and parenting took lots of patience. I had to be understanding, open, loving and have the power to lead my family down a better path than what I sometimes followed. I learned real quick that I had to give everything up to the Lord and pray because I had no control over what life sometimes threw our way. I also had to pray that I would be an understanding and patient mother and wife.
My grandmother taught me that who else better to look to for guidance than Mary, the mother of God. A woman who was younger than I when she was blessed with a life within her, with a devoted husband who loved her unconditionally and who would face many hardships as she’d watch her child suffer. Mary is a perfect example of a devoted wife and mother. When I felt like I had nowhere to go or no one to help me, I’d pray. I never thought of praying the rosary though. I thought the rosary was only prayed at funerals or that it was repetition praying that got you nowhere. BOY WAS I WRONG!
I found myself watching my child turn to drugs because he carried such anger towards his biological mother and towards me, his step-mother and my other child being lost in the chaos. I felt so alone and scared so I started praying the rosary even though at the time I didn’t think it would help. Praying the rosary ended up transforming me and creating miracles in my entire family life. I prayed the rosary daily and began to truly trust in its miracles, in God’s plan for my family and in myself.
My faith led me towards the desire and hunger for sanctification. I want to become holy. I want to recognize God in my life and in myself. I want to be His hands and feet. I want to give back to Him what is His and help others in the same journey. This is how I found myself in the Legion of Mary. The main purpose of the Legion of Mary is to give glory to God through the sanctification of its members. So even though through the Legion of Mary we evangelize and help the pastor reach his flock, we also help ourselves become what God created us to be, Holy. I love being a Legionary! The Legion saves me from myself daily. I pray you too will consider joining the Legion of Mary."
“Where has this been all my life?” that was my reaction to my first Legion Of Mary meeting many years ago. We knelt to pray the rosary, rose to hear an inspiriting reading from the Legion handbook and then were sent - in twos – to allow Mother Mary to visit her children through “us”. It’s a great way to be “used!”
"The Legion of Mary, listed officially as a pious union in the Church may be defined as an association of Catholics, formed into an army for service in the spiritual warfare which the Church is perpetually waging against the evil forces in the world. The Legion aims to sanctify its members by a solid interior life of prayer which forms the mainspring of a very definite, active cooperation in spiritual work assigned by the Church. A Legionary must forget himself, his own comforts and desires and concentrate completely on what he can do for others with the power of the Holy Spirit and the ministering help of Mary..."
"Membership in the Legion is open to all Catholic men and women who lead edifying lives and are animated by the Legion spirit or at least desire to foster that spirit in themselves and are willing to fulfill the required duties..." Founder Frank Duff described the members of the Legion: "Not special souls or unusual types, but ordinary Catholics living the everyday life of the world. Its membership comprises the learned and the unlearned, laborers and leisured, the unemployed, widely differing classes, colors, races, including not a few whom the world would consider as primitive or depressed. In a word, it represents typical Catholicism."
Interested in becoming a Legionary and being part of Mary's army? Join us on Mondays at 6:45 p.m. in room 1.
For those interested in the Legion of Mary but cannot attend the Monday meetings, consider becoming an Auxiliary Member. Auxiliary members do not undertake the active apostolate of weekly meetings and weekly two hour assignment, but they assist the active Legionaries with the Tessera Prayers, which consist of all the prayers of the weekly meeting.

Founder of the Legion of Mary, Frank Duff was born in Dublin, Ireland, on June 7, 1889. He entered the Civil Service at the age of 18. At 24 he joined the Society of St. Vincent de Paul where he was led to a deeper commitment to his Catholic faith and at the same time he acquired a great sensitivity to the needs of the poor and underprivileged.
Along with a group of Catholic women and Fr. Michael Toher, Dublin Archdiocese, he formed the first praesidium of the Legion of Mary on September 7, 1921. From that date until his death, November 7, 1980, he guided the world-wide extension of the Legion with heroic dedication. He attended the Second Vatican Council as a lay observer.
His profound insights into the role of the Blessed Virgin in the plan of Redemption, as also into the role of the lay faithful in the mission of the Church, are reflected in the Legion Handbook which is almost entirely his composition.
Edel Quinn was born on September 14, 1907. At age 17, she worked as a secretary to help family finances, and joined the Legion of Mary, at age 20. Frank Duff asked her to take charge of the Sancta Maria Hostel, a refuge for the rehabilitation of Dublin prostitutes.
In 1936 she was sent from Dublin, Ireland to establish the Legion of Mary in East and Central Africa. The difficulties (advanced Tuberculosis, rough terrain, raging storms, oceans of mud, malaria, dysentery and pleurisy) were enormous but she met every challenge with unwavering faith and courage. When others faltered her invariable response was, "Why can't we trust Our Lady?" or "Our Lady will see after things". For nearly eight years, her health steadily declining, she worked over the vast territories committed to her. Hundreds of Legion praesidia and many higher councils were set up on an enduring basis. As a result, thousands of Africans are engaged in the Church's work of evangelization.
At the source of all Edel's activity was her deep union with God, sustained by constant prayer. The Eucharist was the centre of her life: "What a desolation life would be without the Eucharist", she wrote. Her devotion to Mary was marked by childlike trust and utter generosity. She said she could never refuse Our Lady anything she thought she wanted. Mary's rosary seemed to be always in her hand.
Everyone who knew her, including her parents, her three sisters and a brother, describe Edel as having been totally unselfish, giving herself to others without consideration of herself. Edel had a concern for everyone and shared in their sufferings, but never revealed her own. She was truly patient in her suffering, which was considerable, but she never gave evidence of pain or worriment. She was always cheerful, even when she was in intense pain or extreme discomfort.
Edel died in Nairobi on May 12, 1944. Those persons who knew her speak of her natural simplicity, her generosity, and her fearlessness. To Edel her Legion work was sacred. With an extraordinary ability to organize, she gave her time, her talents and her toil to the Legion, without ever counting the cost.
Servant of God, Alphonsus Lambe,
(known as Alfie)
Like St. John he was a precursor - the precursor of the Legion of Mary, which Pope Paul VI described as "the greatest movement which has been established for the good of souls since the era of the great religious orders".
For almost six years he worked ceaselessly in promoting the Legion of Mary in Columbia, Argentina, Ecuador, Uruguay and Brazil. After a short but grave illness he died in Buenos Aires on the feast of St. Agnes, 21st January 1959.
God had bestowed on him great natural gifts, a personality which attracted souls to the service and love of God, an infectious enthusiasm, and a facility for learning languages, which enabled him to rapidly attain fluency in Spanish and Portuguese.
During his years in South America he set up a great number of branches of the Legion of Mary, and trained a multitude in the apostolate of the Legion. His devotion to Mary was outstanding, and in contacts with Legionaries and others he explained and urged the practice of the True Devotion to Our Lady.
He is buried in the vault of the Irish Christian Brothers, in the Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires.
The primary purpose of the Pilgrim Virgin Statue home family visitation is to aid families in responding to the requests made by the Blessed Mary during her apparitions at Fatima. The essence of her requests is threefold: Return to God; Make reparation for sins; Pray the Rosary for Peace.
- Return to God: Turn away from sin and obey the Ten Commandments.
- Make reparation for sins: Practice some form of penance and sacrifice in atonement for our own sins and the sins of others. An offering of the sacrifices required in performing the daily duties of one’s state in life is a good starting point.
- Pray the Rosary for Peace: She asked us to pray the Rosary every day.
The commitment required of those families desiring to welcome Mary into their homes is threefold.
A 2 week visitation (unless otherwise specified) consists of the following:
1. The Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Mary is escorted to the home at the agreed date and time by no less than a pair of Our Lady Star of the Sea Praesidium (Legion of Mary) members of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.
2. The statue is enthroned and displayed at the location prepared by the family.
3. A brief welcome prayer is recited by all present led by the head of the family or his designate.
4. Each day the family fulfills their commitment to pray the rosary together for a week at a convenient time of their choosing. At the request of the family, the Pilgrim Virgin Statue can extend its stay for up to another week if scheduling permits.
5. At the appointed date and time the members of the Legion of Mary return to the home, lead a short concluding prayer service, and escorts the Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Mary to the next family’s home.
To arrange for a home family visitation, please call or text María Lorenzo at 832-814-8248, or Eileen Kenney at 281-488-0653, or email at legionofmarystpaul@gmail.com.
